Rangers International, the Nigerian league champions, are optimistic about advancing to the next round of the CAF Champions League following a 1-0 victory over U.S. Zilimadjou in the first leg of the preliminary round.
The decisive goal came from Uwumiro Frank in the 22nd minute, assisted by Agu Kenechukwu. Despite a spirited effort from U.S. Zilimadjou in the second half, Rangers managed to hold on to their lead.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and confidence in their ability to secure qualification.
“It was a game we had control over in the first stanza and could have scored more goals that would have killed any fight back from our opponent,” he said.
“We lowered our guard in the second stanza and they came out to attack, but we stood out to see off the encounter. We will go back to the drawing board to prepare very well for the return leg and we are positive going forward.”
Rangers’ captain, Ugwueze Chinemerem, echoed the coach’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenges faced but emphasizing the importance of the win.
“The game did not go the way we planned it but the win is very important for us,” he noted.
“I think with this result, we are in good stead to pick a ticket into the next round but we have some work to do before the return leg. This is gone and to the glory of God, it turned in our favor. It was a vital win.”
The return leg will take place at the same venue on Friday, August 23. Rangers will use a friendly match against Blessed Stars Academy on Tuesday, August 20, to fine-tune their preparations.
With the first leg victory in their pocket, Rangers International are in a strong position to progress further in the CAF Champions League.
