Surulere Marathon gets backing from Lagos Sports Chief

The Lagos State Sports Commission has pledged its full support behind “LERE FUNATHON” initiative, a 10km marathon and funfair extravaganza organized by the Surulere Local Government Area.

Drawing inspiration from Surulere’s vibrant spirit and love for sports, the event aims to bring the community together on August 17th.

The Lere Funathon caters to all ages and fitness levels as the marathon itself is expected to attract over 300 enthusiastic amateur runners.

The local organizing committee, led by chairman Sola Lawson the CEO of UB40 Sports Marketing, received praise from Lagos Sports Commission Director-General Lekan Fatodu for their meticulous planning.

He was particularly impressed with the designated race route, strategically mapped out within an area boasting two international stadiums.

Fatodu highlights the event’s potential to promote community cohesion, inspire healthy lifestyles, and foster engagement across various age groups. He also recognizes the economic benefits associated with a fitter populace.

He pledged not only his support but also his personal participation at the starting point.

He said, “I will not be surprised that this will catch the attention of a lot of people. This speaks to a lot of things: community cohesion, the opportunity to inspire a lifestyle for fitness and wellness, as well as engagement across different ages and categories.

“I’m very impressed with the coordination and the efforts that have been put into the routes, even at 10km.

“I’m not only going to commend you; I am going to give my word to be part of this. The date has been marked out, and I also want to be part of the starting point. And there is an economic impact to this in terms of productivity that comes from people who are fit. You have one of the greatest cheerleaders on this agenda.”

The 10km marathon will be a funfair slated to take place on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
