Patrick Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, recently explained the rationale behind the creation of the lucrative African Football League. Motsepe shared insights during discussions at the nation’s Cup, set to kick off in Cote d’Ivoire on January 13, 2024.
The business tycoon turned president highlighted that the African Football League aims to provide participating clubs with opportunities to earn more money for developing their teams and acquiring players.
Announced on November 28, 2019, by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the league was initially launched as the African Super League in response to the failed European Super League. Running concurrently with the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, the African Football League is designed to offer financial boosts to clubs, narrowing the gap with their counterparts globally.
In a recent edition, Enyimba FC represented Nigeria in the 8-team format but exited the competition, losing to eventual runner-up Wydad Casablanca. Enyimba received $1,000,000 for participating, while the winners, Orlando Pirates, claimed $4 million, and runners-up Wydad Casablanca secured 3 million dollars.
The competition is poised to expand further, with the introduction of more teams expected in the 2024-2025 season.
