Former Nigeria Premier Football League Champions, Akwa United, have maintained their impressive record at home against club sides based in Lagos.
The Promise Keepers recently dropped two points at the Nest of Champions in Uyo but extended their unbeaten streak against Lagos-based teams on their home turf.
Akwa United has faced all three teams that have gained promotion to the top flight and has yet to suffer defeat. This remarkable streak goes back to their encounters with the now-defunct club MFM, a team they faced five times, winning four times and drawing once, with an aggregate score of 12-3.
Their unbeaten run persisted even during the solitary campaign of another defunct clubside, Ikorodu United, when Akwa United comfortably dispatched them 3-0.
Sporting Lagos became the third team to fail to secure maximum points against Akwa United in a stadium that has proven to be a fortress. The match ended in a goalless draw, adding to Akwa United’s unbeaten record against Lagos teams.
Akwa United Football Club, based in Uyo, is hopeful that by maintaining this streak and avoiding defeats, they can replicate their 2021 success that secured them the league title.
