In recent developments, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken action against two prominent clubs, resulting in a substantial fine for Kano Pillars and a stern warning for Heartland.
Kano Pillars found themselves in hot water after their Matchday 4 fixture against Rivers United. The league announced a fine of 1 Million Naira for Kano Pillars due to the encroachment of their supporters onto the pitch in their 1-0 victory over Rivers United. The breach of Rule B13.18 of the league rules led to this penalty. Kano Pillars have been given a 14-day deadline to pay the fine, with a clear warning that failure to comply will be seen as a continued violation of the NPFL Framework and Rules.
The incident in question revolved around Kano Pillars fans, who couldn’t contain their excitement and rushed onto the field to celebrate Rabiu Alli’s 93rd-minute winning goal against former league champions, Rivers United.
In a separate matter, Heartland of Owerri received a stern warning from the league board following their goalless draw against Katsina United. The league board expressed its displeasure and concerns regarding the behavior of Heartland’s fans, who held back players and officials at the stadium after the match.
The memo, titled “MatchDay 4 Disturbances,” revealed the league’s dissatisfaction with the fans’ actions, stating, “Such behavior is unacceptable and tarnishes the reputation of both Heartland and the NPFL.” The warning was accompanied by advice for Heartland to organize seminars to re-educate their supporters about sportsmanship and the principles of fair play.
These developments serve as a reminder of the NPFL’s commitment to upholding the integrity and sportsmanship of Nigerian football.
