Rovers Football Club of Calabar bounced back with a 1-0 victory against Smart City at the U.J Esuene Stadium. After a setback in Lagos against 1472 FC, Rovers aimed to maintain momentum in their quest for a playoff spot in the Super 8. Coach Samson Unanuel introduced five changes, including the return of 17-year-old goalkeeper Clinton Ezekiel.
Despite their efforts to dismantle Smart City’s defense, Rovers struggled to break through, with the Lagos-based side effectively thwarting attacks led by Omolabi. Coach Samson reinforced the attack with substitutions, bringing in Wasiu Ajisafe and Stephen Eregare for Duru Ifeanyi and Amos Okoro.
The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when a reckless challenge on Stephen Eregare in the box resulted in a penalty, duly converted by Omolabi, giving Rovers the lead. Holding on, Rovers secured their second win in three league games, currently holding the 3rd position on the table.
Next up, Rovers face their former NPFL side Dakaada in the AkwaCross derby next Sunday.
