Oshoala goal was not enough as Bay FC suffered defeat

The San Diego Wave returned to winning ways with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bay FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night. The match marked the debut of Mexican National Team star Maria Sanchez, who entered the game to a roaring ovation in the 79th minute.

This win snapped a two-game road trip where the Wave failed to find the net, earning just one point. Head Coach Casey Stoney praised the team’s improved attacking tactics and relentless work ethic, key factors in securing the victory.

Makenzy Doniak opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a stunning 19-yard strike. Jaedyn Shaw followed suit in the 78th minute, breaking the 1-1 deadlock with a clinical close-range finish. These goals marked the first of the season for both forwards, who were among the Wave’s top scorers last year alongside the currently absent Alex Morgan.

Sharpened Attack and Wave’s Best Break

The Wave displayed a more aggressive approach with improved spacing, generating more scoring opportunities compared to their previous outings. Doniak’s goal, her most impressive yet for the Wave, showcased her skill after receiving a lofted pass from rookie Kimmi Ascanio. She cleverly evaded defenders and unleashed a right-footed shot that nestled inside the left post, securing Ascanio’s first career assist.

Shaw Responds and Bennett Creates

Bay FC equalized in the 48th minute through Nigerian forward Asifat Oshoala, a former player for European champions Barcelona. However, the Wave orchestrated their best counter-attack of the season to regain the lead. Starting from midfield, Shaw, a rising star with the US National Team, combined with Savannah McCaskill for a quick give-and-go move. McCaskill then found Elyse Bennett on the right wing, with Shaw making a perfectly timed run down the left flank. Bennett delivered a pinpoint pass across the goalmouth, and Shaw finished with a decisive touch to secure a memorable goal, as described by Coach Stoney.

The San Diego Wave are back on track, and their fans can look forward to more exciting performances with the addition of Maria Sanchez to the squad.
