The climactic showdown of the annual Eastern Naval Command Intra-Command Football Competition took center stage at the Nigeria Navy Victory Ship base in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday, September 23rd.
This highly anticipated competition, orchestrated by the navy to foster sports development within its ranks, especially football, attracted distinguished naval dignitaries, including the Commander of the Nigeria Navy College, Rear Admiral MB Hassan
The pinnacle of this tournament, following its launch on Thursday, September 21st, witnessed a one-sided final, where Forward Operating Base Ibaka emerged triumphant, defeating Eastern Fleet Command B by an impressive margin of four goals to nil.
Operating Base Ibaka launched into the game with vigor, undeterred by the challenging condition of the pitch due to heavy rainfall earlier in the day. Their performance was nothing short of stellar.
Eric James secured the first goal, capitalizing on a free kick deflected into the net by an Eastern Fleet defender. Their second goal followed swiftly, courtesy of the match’s standout player and Tournament MVP, Bassey Akpanim, who weaved past three defenders from midfield before expertly slotting the ball past Adeola, Eastern Fleet’s goalkeeper, who had displayed remarkable prowess.
Monday Effiong, the scorer of the goal that propelled Ibaka into the finals, continued to shine, netting a brace to complete the resounding victory.
In a post-match statement during the awards ceremony, the Commander of the Naval College, Rear Admiral MB Hassan commended the organizers and urged navy personnel to maintain the spirit of unity demonstrated throughout the competition.
