Coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, has reacted to the Super Eagles’ disappointing 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
Jose Peseiro’s tutored side suffered from a lack of clinical finishing upfront as they created 7 big chances in the game and converted only one. Equatorial Guinea, who had been on a good run heading into the competition, took the lead against the run of play when in the 36th minute, José Machín set up Iban Salvador to put Equatorial Guinea ahead.
Nigeria responded immediately with star striker Victor Osimhen at the near post, heading in a deflected Ademola Lookman cross. Nigeria created more chances and failed to convert as Victor Osimhen, Zaidu Sanusi, and Moses Simon were all culpable.
Reacting after the game, Jose Peseiro rued his side’s missed chances. He said, “We did everything to win; we created many and clear opportunities, and we simply deserved to win. Playing at 2 pm isn’t easy, so the temperature and humidity were not good, but our players managed it very well. It wasn’t easy playing in these conditions.
Jose Peseiro is hopeful and in a spiritual mood as he hopes God gives victory when next the Eagles go up against Cote d’Ivoire. The 63-year-old said, “I am sad, the players are also sad, but God gives and God takes. Next game, God could give us.”
The 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea extends Jose Peseiro’s poor run with the Eagles, having failed to win in his last three matches. The Super Eagles have a lot of work to do and will face Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday by 6 pm in a mouth-watering clash in Abidjan.
