Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sports, Damilare Orimoloye, gave the assurance in Ikeja on Saturday.

He declared that the Teslim Balogun Stadium is one of five stadiums undergoing renovation. The move signifies a shift in focus from the central Mobolaji Johnson Arena, aiming to foster sports in all regions of Lagos.

Initiated in 2021, the remodeling of Teslim Balogun Stadium will feature all-covered spectator stands and a re-grassed football pitch. Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar, the Director-General of Lagos State Sports Commission, asserted that the redeveloped stadium would set a new benchmark for sports infrastructure in Nigeria. He expressed his confidence that the stadium would meet international standards, potentially making it the new home for the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles.

More than a mere infrastructural facelift, this initiative is an integral part of the state’s strategy to engage the youth in sports and distract them from engaging in vices.

The modeling of sports infrastructure across Lagos is a testament to the Nigerian government’s commitment to uplifting the country’s sports landscape.

This move, coupled with the Federal government’s pledged support for private investments in sports, holds promising prospects for the future of sports in Nigeria.
