After AFCON heroics, Bassey and Iwobi's goals sink Manchester United

Nigerian duo Calvin Bassey and Alexander Iwobi were on target for Fulham, who edged Manchester United 2-1 in a Premier League game-week 26 fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

Manchester United are decimated by injuries to Rasmus Højlund, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martínez, Anthony Martial, and Luke Shaw, who are all sidelined.

The Cottagers seized the initiative to secure a crucial win on the road with goals from Bassey and Iwobi, who helped Nigeria finish as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations recently rounded off in Cote d’Ivoire.

Bassey put Fulham in front with a thunderbolt on 65 minutes, Harry Maguire levelled Manchester United on 89 minutes, and Iwobi sealed victory for the visitors seven minutes into added time, a beautiful victory and Fulham’s first at Old Trafford since 2003.

It was Iwobi’s fourth goal in 17 Premier league appearances for Fulham since joining them from Everton on September 23, having earlier scored a brace in a 5-0 home win over Nottingham Forest on December 6 and opening his account in a 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on November 27.

It was a feat to remember for his Super Eagles teammate, Bassey, being his first goal for Fulham in 16 league appearances in total. since joining them from Ajax Amsterdam in July.
