Gateway United clinched a vital 2-1 victory over Inter Lagos FC, bolstering their push for a spot in the NNL playoffs, in a fiercely contested match at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.

Under the leadership of Samson Omiponle, Gateway United showcased their resilience, extending their unbeaten streak to seven games and securing four consecutive home wins. With this triumph, they have accumulated 22 points, trailing table-toppers Osun United by a margin of four points.

The ceremonial kickoff was performed by the outgoing Head of Service in the state, Mr. Kola Peter Fagbohun, setting the stage for an intense encounter. From the onset, Gateway United demonstrated their attacking prowess, with Samuel Christian and stand-in captain Ediddon Adrian leading the charge.

In the 45th minute, Odusina Sunkanmi broke the deadlock with a precise low volley, sending the home crowd into raptures. The momentum continued in the second half, with Babatunde Taofeek winning a penalty, expertly converted by Ediddon Adrian to double Gateway United’s lead.

Despite relentless pressure from Inter Lagos, Gateway United‘s defense held firm until Akinola Wale pulled one back for the visitors with a late header. However, goalkeeper Oladeji Joshua ensured Gateway United maintained their advantage by saving a crucial free kick.

Looking ahead, Gateway United gears up for a showdown against One Rocket in Akwa Ibom on Sunday, April 7th. Coach Samson Omiponle expressed confidence in his team’s character and determination, emphasizing their readiness to secure maximum points in Uyo.

“We will play One Rocket on Sunday. They robbed us of three points in the first leg at home. We will reclaim those points in Uyo,” remarked Coach Omiponle, highlighting the team’s determination to rectify previous setbacks and continue their ascent in the league standings.
