Nigerians Shine as Leverkusen Seal Historic Bundesliga Title

Super Eagles duo Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella etched their names into German football history on Sunday. Their contributions powered Bayer Leverkusen to a dominant 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen, securing the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title and bringing an end to Bayern Munich’s long-standing reign.

Boniface, a constant threat throughout the season, took center stage. He converted a penalty in the 24th minute, adding to his impressive tally of 11 goals and 9 assists in just 18 appearances. He further cemented his impact by setting up Granit Xhaka’s goal in the second half before exiting the match to a hero’s welcome.

Tella, Boniface’s fellow countryman and teammate, also played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s comprehensive victory.

This triumph marks a significant milestone for Nigerian players in the Bundesliga. While several Nigerians, including legends like Austin Okocha and Victor Ikpeba, have graced the league, only Sunday Oliseh and Pascal Ojigwe have lifted the Bundesliga trophy – with Bayern Munich in 2002 and 1998, respectively. Boniface and Tella’s achievement with Leverkusen elevates them to this exclusive group.

The win over Bremen wasn’t just about the title; it extended Leverkusen’s unbeaten league run to a staggering 43 games, capping off a remarkable season under manager Xabi Alonso.
