Ekiti Queens secured their place in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) next season with a thrilling 2-0 victory over Rivers Angels in a must-win encounter.
The Ado Ekiti stadium witnessed a nail-biting match as Ekiti Queens desperately fought to avoid relegation. The home side took the lead in the 19th minute through a penalty converted by Olaleye Odunayo. Rivers Angels pressured them throughout the first half, but the Ekiti defense held strong.
Second Half Seals the Deal:
Ekiti Queens doubled their lead in the 68th minute with a goal from Rashidat Salau. This crucial goal put them firmly in control of their own destiny and ensured their survival in the league. Rivers Angels struggled to respond, knowing that any goal conceded could send them into the relegation zone.
Sunshine Queens Face Relegation
Results elsewhere also helped Ekiti Queens’ cause. Remo Stars Ladies defeated Sunshine Queens 2-1 in Ikenne, sending the latter team down to the lower division. This meant Ekiti Queens’ 14 points were enough to finish 7th in the table, one place above the relegated Sunshine Queens on 13 points.
Ekiti Queens can breathe a sigh of relief after their dramatic escape from relegation. They showed incredible resilience and determination to secure another season in the NWFL.
