The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered their second 1-0 defeat in the ongoing Olympics, this time to reigning world champions Spain.
Alexia Putellas’ cross-cum-shot from a free-kick found its way into the net as the Falcons, who had restricted the Spanish side to shots from outside the box, were finally breached.

Spain’s impressive form, winning 31 out of their last 36 games, highlighted the challenge Nigeria faced.

Profligacy:
Nigeria conceded possession to the Spanish side, with Randy Waldrum’s obvious tactics being to sit back and hit the Spaniards on the break.
The game plan worked fine but was let down by the team’s inability to convert chances. Three clear-cut opportunities were missed, with Rasheedat Ajibade, who has been impressive throughout the tournament, among the culprits.
Ihezuo and Okoronkwo also failed to hit the target despite breaking down the Spaniards’ defence.
Defensive Solidity:
Nigeria’s resolute defence was able to ward off the onrushing Spaniards as they struggled to create chances against a solid defence led by Ohale. The Falcons forced the Spaniards to try their luck from outside the box and defended their area well.
Randy Waldrum’s Tactics:
Another game for the American coach to prove his mettle against the best in the world, and he did considerably well. Reigning six-time African Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala made a return to lead the line in another tweak from the gaffer.

The setup, though conceding possession to the world champions, was clear as the Falcons lacked the technical ability to match up to Spain. The tactics could have won the game if not for the missed opportunities.
