D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama has been awarded the title of Best Coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics, according to a statement by FIBA.

Among the youngest coaches in history, Wakama made history by leading Nigeria to become the first African country ever to qualify for the quarterfinals at the Olympics.

In this article, Naira Sports examines the possible reasons she received this prestigious award:

Rena Record-Breaking Achievements

Since taking over as head coach of D’Tigress, Rena has continued to break records with the team.

The Nigerian coach was able to motivate the team to victories over World Number 3 Australia and World Number 5 Canada.

After a disastrous second quarter against the Canadians, she successfully lead the team to a surprising win.

Putting Africa on the Map

Nigeria’s qualification for the quarterfinals was a historic first for any African team at the Olympics. Of the 32 wins by African countries at the Olympics, female basketball teams have only contributed once before.

Wakama set a new pace by contributing twice with massive wins over Canada and Australia.

Since assuming the role of head coach of D’Tigress, Rena Wakama has transformed the team despite facing poor preparation and administrative challenges.

She continued to excel in difficult scenarios, proving herself to be a generational talent.
